🤖 @emma.hatcher asked if it was bad to take a pre workout before her gym sessions most mornings. While I might not be a coffee drinker or pre workout taker, I hope this comparison helps to show why pre workout might not be your best option.

🦊From the outset I just want to say this...There is nothing inherently “bad” about pre workouts and if you want to use them, go right ahead and enjoy the buzz. Just keep in mind though, despite what the owner of the supplement store might say, you don’t need them nor will it give you super human strength or fat burning capabilities.

🦄Even though the list of ingredients on the back of all pre workouts are extensive and contain names that sound like some drunk lab technician made them up, their perceived benefits basically come from 1 ingredient, CAFFEINE.

☕️While caffeine has been shown in studies to improve people’s physical ability to perform a task those same studies also showed that the benefits begin to wane as people develop a tolerance to it.

😜VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: While the product I compared on this post had 150mg of caffeine per serving, some have been found to contain as much as 435mg! This dose on its own might not be dangerous to your health, however, it could leave you feeling nauseated, shaky and ill or could even exacerbate an underlying heart condition, so beware.

👺My take away from this post is, while pre workouts are sold as the key to becoming a lifting machine that can melt fat like butter in a microwave. The fact is they are just filled with caffeine which can be found in your everyday coffee.

🐸If you need or want a buzz to get you going for that early morning workout, my suggestion is this.....Have a coffee! It has zero calories meaning you will still be in a fasted state, you aren’t taking a gamble on what other ingredients are in your drink and you won’t potentially turn into a raging hulk juiced up on nearly 500mg of caffeine.

Toughest session of my life today. Not that the work was tough on paper, my mind was somewhere else. It's been a tough week mentally to begin with and I've been in a bit of a funk. Then today we brought our dog in for a knee problem thinking worst case scenario was surgery on a torn ligament. Turns out it's cancer. There's a 90% chance it's something that will spread no matter what and the research shows they have about 4 months if that's it. She was perfectly healthy and happy other than her leg pain... We had a biopsy done and hoping for that 10% chance (she'd still have to lose that leg) but I know it's not likely.

Everyone handles things different. I am not "hardcore" because I go to the gym when others probably wouldn't. I do it because the gym is my happy place. Today it's a distraction. The gym gives me balance. It's not easy fighting back tears between sets or randomly crying between check ins, but structure helps me. I don't want to lay around all day feeling bad, others would and that's okay too.

The point is everyone has struggles and life will always have ups and downs and it's okay to feel your feelings. You just can't let it derail you from the big picture. Take your time if you need it, but don't forget to keep showing up.

Because my food is usually lacking with nutrients, I take supplements to make up for it.

* DOGDIET requirements *

- Fasting: 23hrs daily. Drink plenty of water to stop hunger pains, growling and any other issues. I drink around 4L of water during my fasts with a tiny bit of sea salt for vital nutrients. DON'T use tablesalt. Its stripped of any nutrients.

- Exercise: make sure you keep exercising, it is vital in maintaining muscle during your fasting periods. I usually train in the afternoon around 3pm and take pre-workout powder 30mins prior. Using @bulknutrients 3x2.0 pre-workout powder ( banned soon ). My workout routine is up on an earlier post. Takes about 1hr to do, 6 days a week. Ab & glute work is also up on a previous post. Skip if abs & glutes are still sore.

- Meal: 1 meal preferably just before bed ( stay within your own calorie requirements). @myfitnesspal is a handy app to find out your calories. Deficit if cutting, maintenance if maintaining & surplus if bulking. )

- Total nutrient requirements:
- Protein: 105g min, no max.
- Carbs: 0g min, no max.
- Fat: 80g min, no max.
- Calcium: 1000mg min.
- Potassium: 4700mg min.
- Fibre: 0g min.
- Vitamin C: 90mg
- Vitamin A: half a carrot for now. Haven't looked into supplement yet. .
Supplement dosages vary depending on nutrients lacking from the food you choose. Still researching so may alter or add to the list. The @myfitnesspal app is handy to find out how much you need.

Chest and triceps day, but I’m adding in jump rope intervals for some additional cardio. I found a great timer app. You can set high and low intensity times and number of rounds. It’ll even play your favorite playlist. 
I’m doing 10 rounds, 45 seconds of jumping with a 15 second rest.

I’ve been using the crock pot lately to cook my chicken and it has been such a lifesaver!! I just throw in about 5 breasts with some onions and seasoning and cook it all night on low...the next morning their nice and tender and ready for my meal pre containers 👌🏽💚 .

I find this slantboard to be a very useful tool. I'm using it here to slightly raise my heel so that I can better perform the exercise despite my ankles still lacking mobility. Useful for warm-up sets too and calf raises if I lift it more. 
The fact that I can perform all these exercises barefoot is a big plus for me because I want to strengthen my feet but if I had injuries or restrictions I would wear whatever footware helped me complete my workouts.

Throw nothing out, there's a time and place for everything.

Demonstrated here are two variations which can be used either in a warm up before deadlifting or towards the end of a session. 
Band resisted reverse hyper extensions.
Single leg prisoner back extensions. 
Control the tempo to avoid swinging and stressing the lumbar spine by over extending! Focus on mind to muscle connection. 
Both of these work glutes, hamstrings and lower back.
