Hey friends! We are safe, though standing in utter amazement that our 16th floor flat near the top of a mountain can flood the way it is currently flooding... we used all our towels and are now moving onto blankets and sheets to stop the river of rain streaming in from our windows. The noise from the typhoon wind is so loud. I've been through quite a few number 8 signal typhoons, and was once evacuated from the entire state of Florida because of a hurricane, but this is my first ever perfect 10. The last number 10 signal typhoon to hit this area was in 2012, two months after we'd moved from Macau to Shanghai. And fun fact: in the last 71 years this is only the 14th number 10 signal to hit Hong Kong! Right now all busses and ferries have stopped running, and the only MTR trains in operation are the ones completely underground. We are completely cut off here in Discovery Bay, but there is an ambulance slowly going back and forth on the main road, lights and siren blaring. The waterline at the beach is all way up to the trees, and there are actual waves rolling in which feels like home in the midst of this wild chaos. The airport (which is also on our island) has cancelled hundreds of flights. But we have power, internet, heaps of food, and a tiny poodle to snuggle, so we are fine, promise. My hubby doesn't come back to Hong Kong until Sunday, so he'll miss both the storm and the aftermath of cleaning up our soggy home. I hear he's bringing me back something awesome though... ;) Personally, I think this side of the planet was envious of the amount of attention the other side of the planet was getting with the total solar eclipse and was like, "Three minutes of darkness in the middle of the day? You ain't seen nothing yet, watch THIS!" .
Typhoon Hato. Typhoon signal number 10 (first time in 5 years) at high tide. Tai Pak Beach is underwater. Lots of tree damage. Someone in our building lost a window. The winds are so strong I can feel our building sway 😳The noise in the video is the wind. By far the craziest weather I've experienced! But we still have electricity (would never happen in NH). #typhoonhato#hongkong#arounddb#discoverybay
At one point this weekend, we had to put the giant raft we were towing on a 'beach' while the boys went knee boarding. My sister offered to stay with the raft and John wanted to stay too. He played 'Survivor Man' and smelled appalling when we returned. But he was so happy, so... #mud#orpoop#ocd#discoverybay#survivor#johnandrewleal
