On September 21st, 1993 Seattle Grunge Rock Band Nirvana released their third and final studio album; “In Utero”. Less than 7 months later Lead Singer/ Guitar Player Kurt Cobain would be found dead of a self inflicted gun shot blast.
The Album marked a solid departure from their major label debut, “Nevermind”. Producer Steve Albini was hired as the band was looking for a rawer, more natural sound; feeling that its predecessor sounded too polished and produced. The album was recorded over a 2 week period, with the band essentially playing the songs live with minimal overdubs and studio embellishments. After handing over the completed album to their record label, the label deemed it ‘unreleasable”, and producer Scott Litt was brought in to re-mix several tracks.
In Utero received mostly positive reviews from critics, although some were mixed. Rolling Stone reviewer David Fricke best sums it up saying “the album is a lot of things – brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it's a triumph of the will”.
In Utero went on to sell 15M copies worldwide and is ranked Number435 on Rolling Stone Magazines list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time!
Tonight I am giving this 2013 “20th Anniversary Edition” a spin in honour of the late Kurt Cobain!
